Convection heat transfer occurs through the movement of fluids like air, because warm fluids are lighter (less dense) than cold fluids. Warm air rises and cold air falls.

The movement of air through convection can be a significant cause for discomfort - you may have felt this as cold air falls to the floor in winter, making your feet cold. Or when warm air rises to upper stories in the summer, making it hard to sleep.

The thermographic image above shows an infrared reading of a house exterior in winter. The dark areas are cold and the bright yellow areas are warm. This image reveals how hot air climbs through the house to the the highest point before conducting through the roof and walls to the outside, radiating its heat away.

This is a good demonstration of why air sealing and insulation are so important.
